Circus and sideshow, DJs and live bands.
From fire spinning to projection.
Local DJ and sound engineer who really does have his finger on the pulse of the local music scene. KW is known for its jazz and blues, but there’s a whole world of local music in other genres to explore, and we can’t wait for Von Dino Records to take us there.
IlluminAir is bringing a number of award-winning performers to Altekrea, you can catch them performing throughout the weekend! On Friday for the gala we have:
Miranda Tempest – Fire Spinning
JD Spark and Laura Griffin – Duo handbalancing
Itto Katsuguchi – Fire Eater
Stephanie will be bringing the walls of the Mercury Cafe to life with her video artistry. Every part of the cafe is going to be transformed, in one way or another!
11pm-1am on the main stage.
James Downham is a country and rock musician from right here at home in Kitchener. He’s been featured on The Shot twice, in season 2 and season 3, and he’s a great supporter of the local arts scene. We’re very pleased to welcome him onto the main stage to play for us in the City Hall Rotunda on Saturday. You won’t want to miss out, James is one of the region’s finest musicians and songwriters!
Erica Furness – Bed of Nails Sideshow
Rotunda second floor, 8:30 PM, 9:30 PM, 10:15 PM, 12:30 AM
Erica is a member of the IlluminAir troupe. We have a whole bunch of awesome IlluminAir performers all throughout Altekrea. Erica will be performing her bed of nails sideshow act upstairs through Saturday night, and she’ll be joining the rest of her troupe in the fountain outside for the fire spinning at 11pm!
IlluminAir Fire Spinning
11pm outside city hall, at the fountain.
Join a group of the IlluminAir performers at the fountain. As epic as all of the other acts are, this is going to be something very special. Five of the Illuminair crew will be dazzling the crowds at Summer Lights and Altekrea. It will be right after the Our World of Music Festival acts finish up, so just look for the spinning flames and head on over to enjoy! 😀
8pm-11pm on Duke Street.
The DJ is back! Von Dino is going to be on Duke street mixing music combined with animation reels. Make sure to drop by as you check out all the streetside content at Summer Lights.
Pixelstick from the Museum
All night in the City Square in front of Kitchener City Hall.
On Saturday night the Museum will be at Altekrea, outside of the Rotunda by the fountain with their Pixelstick. A Pixelstick is a tall set of LEDs that, when combined with a slow shutter speed on a camera, allow you to paint with light in photographs. You can create abstract waves and circles of coloured light, or load images onto the Pixelstick and have it create them as you walk across the camera’s view.
Rotunda Main Stage at 11 AM, City Square in front of Kitchener City Hall at 12 PM.
We love nerdy artists. (We had to take a short break to watch the minecraft videos on Jim’s channel.) Jim will be playing his beautiful acoustic sound for us twice on Sunday. 🙂
Rotunda Main Stage at 2:00 PM.
Bashar Lulu Jabbour (He/Him) is an immigrant poet! He uses the mundane to give you a glimpse of the complexities of leaving one home for another. Bashar is a storyteller, and in his stories the political is personal. He is a nationally competing poet, finishing 5th (team) & 6th (individual) in Canada, and he has performed his poetry throughout the Region and the country. His debut book will be released with Patchwork Poetry House late 2016.
We’re very pleased to be welcoming Bashar to Altekrea, for a session of intense slam poetry. And we’re jazzed as hell to be bringing you a performance and poet with such fire and exceptional skill with the word.
Rotunda Main Stage at 3:00 PM.
A musical event in KW wouldn’t be complete without Sammy Duke. We adore him, and you will too! Seriously, just take a listen.
“Known for his “amazing and diversified talent” (Velvet Rope Magazine) and his ‘indomitable stage presence’ (The Ontarion), young multi-instrumentalist Samuel “Sammy Duke” Dlugokecki has built a strong reputation as a reliable session performer in the Southern Ontario music scene. He has had the opportunity to perform nationwide across a multitude of venues, has been a session player on two Juno-nominated records, and has worked alongside an incredibly wide array of musicians of varying styles.”
IlluminAir — Again!
City Square Outside Kitchener City Hall, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:00 PM.
Yup. We can’t get enough of the breathtaking circus performers from IlluminAir. They will be performing outside City Hall several times throughout the course of the afternoon on Sunday. It will be a different act each time, get settled, grab some beer and snacks, and enjoy the shows.
